Lately, many of my courses have also featured interactive forums in which we submit postings to class discussion boards. These allow greater opportunities for us to interact with other students in so far as those exchanges involve the course material. Whereas in traditional in-person class settings students interact more than they do online in general, comparatively less of that interaction actually involves the course material. The use of online forums stimulates much greater interaction of the type that allows us to gauge our relative comprehension in comparison to our classmates to a degree that we never could in traditional academic settings.
My Experiences as a Teacher
I have had only limited experience as a teacher but I have had the opportunity to instruct privates in my military responsibilities. In that regard, I have encountered two obstacles to
First, students who have not had as much previous experience using computers for academic purposes need to be taught additional skills besides their substantive academic coursework. Second, I have learned that some students misuse digital media to take the easy way out instead of doing the work they are expected to do. Specifically, I have encountered situations where students obviously simply copied and pasted material from online databases instead of writing their own assignments. In my opinion, this represents the larger paradox of computer use in society. Specifically, computers greatly facilitate modern business and communications but they also provide a mechanism that can be exploited for criminal and other immoral purposes.
